THRIVING ON A SIMULATED MARTIAN OUTPOST Thursday , Oct . 6 , 6:30 to 7:30 p . m . Multi-Purpose Room , 1st floor How close are we to the events portrayed in Andy Weir ’ s bestselling novel , The Martian ? Join us for a fascinating talk with Professor Diane Turnshek , a lecturer in the Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pittsburgh . A former Mars Desert Research Station crew member , Turnshek will discuss current exploration efforts and preparations to put humans on Mars . Registration is required for each adult attending this inperson program . Andy Weir is the featured author for this year ’ s Novel November event on Thursday , Nov . 3 , at 7 p . m .
HALLOWEEN POTION BOTTLES Tuesday , Oct . 11 , 6:30 to 7:30 p . m . Multi-Purpose Room , 1st floor Join Patron Services Coordinator Dianne Finnegan to prepare for a spooky season by making your own creepy Halloween potions ! We will provide you with the supplies to make one decorative glass potion bottle with LED string lights . Registration is required for each adult participating .
FILM SCREENING : THE MARTIAN ( 2015 ) For teens and adults Thursday , Oct . 13 , 6:30 to 9 p . m . Multi-Purpose Room , 1st floor Join us to watch the Oscar-nominated film adaptation of Andy Weir ’ s bestselling novel , The Martian , before he visits Peters Township for Novel November . Popcorn to snack on ! The film is rated PG-13 . Registration is required for each adult participating .
GALAXY POUR PAINTING Thursday , Oct . 20 , 6 to 7 p . m . Multi-Purpose Room , 1st floor We will create four “ out of this world ” galaxy-inspired tile coasters using the pour paint method . We will provide all materials you need at no cost - bring your creativity ! Registration is required and limited to 20 participants .
QUILLING SPOOKY PAPER BATS Wednesday , Oct . 26 , 6:30 to 7:45 p . m . Café Lee , 2nd floor Get into the Halloween spirit by making your own spooky paper bat ! Paper quilling is the art of rolling narrow strips of paper
into coils or scrolls and arranging them into elegant shapes . IT Librarian Brandon Priddy will teach you quilling basics and help you create your own bat . Due to the equipment used , this program is limited to adults only . Registration is required and limited to 6 participants . Register for one session only .
MOONSHOT MUSEUM TALK For teens and adults Thursday , Oct . 27 , 7 to 8 p . m . via Zoom Mike Hennessy from the Moonshot Museum , the only museum in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to focus exclusively on space exploration , will discuss Pittsburgh ’ s contribution to the Space Race and the future of space exploration . SUMINAGASHI INK MARBLING Wednesday , Nov . 2 , 6:30 to 7:45 p . m . Café Lee , 2nd floor Suminagashi , or “ floating ink ,” is an ancient paper marbling technique that involves alternating ink and a resist to create a beautiful sequence of rings . The effect can be subtle or more pronounced , and a unique pattern will surprise you every time . IT Librarian Brandon Priddy will teach you the process and help you create a unique print . Due to the equipment used , this program is limited to adult patrons only . Registration is required and limited to 6 participants .
