On Aug . 1 of this year , Douglas Grimes succeeded Harry Fruecht as the new Chief of Police for Peters Township .

Grimes grew up in the Jefferson Hills area , graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and holds a bachelor ’ s degree in Criminal Justice from Elizabethtown College . He is also a graduate of The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics , Indiana University of Pennsylvania ’ s Police Academy , the Pennsylvania State Police Academy and the FBI National Academy .

At 54 years old , Grimes and his wife , Suzanne , currently live in North Strabane Township , have been married for 35 years and have two sons : Joshua ( 30 ) and Matthew ( 28 ).

Grimes spent 28 years of his career working for the Pennsylvania State Police ( PSP ), assigned to Central Pennsylvania . “ When I initially contemplated retirement from PSP , I began to search for job opportunities that would enable me to use the training and experience I had gained over those 28 years ,” says Grimes . “ When I saw the Peters Township Deputy Police Chief job announcement , I was very excited for the opportunity to move ‘ back home ’ and work in a great community .”

Grimes recalls several fishing trips to Canonsburg Lake with his father and had visited the Peters Township area many times throughout his childhood . Prior to beginning the application process for the available position with the Peters Township Police Department , Grimes and his wife took the time to drive back and explore the Township . “ From the very first time we drove through the Township and explored the area , we were hooked !” exclaims Grimes . “ The beauty and convenience of this area is hard to beat , and the opportunity for continued growth and development is unparalleled .”

Grimes has been with Peters Township for a little over one year now , since he officially accepted the Deputy Police Chief position on Aug . 31 , 2015 .

In August of this year , Grimes was officially promoted to Peters Township ’ s Chief of Police . “ Working into this position over the past year has presented a unique opportunity to learn the existing policies and business processes from the current administration before taking over as Chief of Police ,” says Grimes . “ The time I spent with Chief Harry Fruecht and Deputy Chief Michael Yanchak , afforded me the opportunity to ask questions about the history of the department and the reasoning used in the development of department ’ s current policies and business practices .”

Coming from a much larger agency , Grimes brings a different perspective to Peters Township . “ As we begin to build the future vision and direction of the department , I hope to balance the historical successes with the future vision ,” he says .

To accomplish this , Grimes intends on relying heavily on his newly established command staff including Captain Gerald Maloni and Captain Jennifer Ford . “ These additions combined with the dedicated men and women of the Peters Township Police Department will undoubtedly pay large dividends towards our ability to protect and serve the residents of this community .”
