GET TO KNOW:
Orchestra students shared information on the cello.
“ Music brings together students from all areas and grades in our school,” said sophomore violinist Hannah Cataneo.“ I ' ve gotten to know some amazing people that I would have never encountered without our music program bringing us together.”
Another key element of the District’ s music program is the teachers who guide them through the process.
“ Each year we are building,” said McGough, who works with both middle and high school level musicians and sees students through the years where other interests and more challenging school work can lead to students leaving their instruments behind.
“ We understand that taking on an instrument and playing in an ensemble can be demanding,” he adds.“ But while they are learning to read music, they also develop skills like eye-hand-mind coordination, proactive listening skills, team skills for playing in an ensemble and the discipline to practice.” Skills that serve them well beyond the walls of their music classroom.
But for those young students at Bower Hill and Pleasant Valley who were tapping their toes along to the music they heard and smiling as the high schoolers showed off their talents, it’ s the fun of being a part of a music ensemble that was the focus of the day.
“ You don ' t realize how much you may enjoy playing an instrument until you try,” said Molly Barry who plays the trombone in the Marching Band and Wind Symphony.“ The biggest benefit of the music program is being a part of such an amazing environment.”
As the final notes echoed through the gymnasium and the instruments were packed away, one thing was clear— the music had done more than just entertain, it had inspired.
Mr. Young helped a 3rd grade volunteer conduct the band during the visit.

What made you want to become a teacher?
When I was young I never considered being a teacher or going to college for a degree in education. After a few years in the workforce I had a strong desire to make more of a difference and a lasting impact. IUP offered me a position as a Graduate Assistant and I went back to school to obtain a Master of Education in Health and Physical Education. With my background I also became certified in BCIT K-12 and English 7-12.
What other interesting jobs have you held? Prior to teaching, I worked in commercial advertising and pharmaceutical marketing. My first ever job was at McDonald’ s when I turned 15 – I think everyone should do a stint in the food service industry.
What is your favorite thing to do outside the classroom?
Outside of the classroom I am an avid reader, enjoy exercising and being physically active, spending time with family and friends and currently am planning my wedding this summer! My fiance is a college basketball coach and I love attending his games and cheering for him and his team!
What has been one of your favorite projects / events / days at school?
Two things come to mind. Writing and receiving the PT Education Foundation grant for 3D Pens for the Intro. to Innovation course last year and planning the PTMS Staff Wellness Day this year! I was introduced to the 3D Pens during a BotsIQ Manufacturing Day Event and was fortunate enough to bring them back to all of our 6th grade students through the grant. The PTMS Staff Wellness Day was a lot of fun to plan and really fulfilling to bring to life! On a daily basis, I love the comradery with my coworkers who have become great friends.
What do you wish every student would know after their time in your classroom? About school, about themselves, about anything!
At the end of each class my students will tell you I always say,“ Have a great day, make good choices”. Life really is about choices and not just the big ones, though those matter too. You only get one body, it’ s important to understand how it works and how to take care of it to have the happiest and healthiest life possible!
