Peters Township Announces
record paving
projects for 2016
PE TE RS TOWN SH I P NE WS
eters Township
It is the time of year once again, when Peters Township prepares to resurface
a portion of its streets that are in need of rehabilitation. As in previous years,
the roster of streets scheduled for resurfacing in 2016 is generally based on a
revolving three-year plan generated from an in-house pavement management
system. The pavement maintenance budget for 2016 is a record $ 1.55 million
and includes not only road resurfacing, but other maintenance practices such
as our annual street rejuvenator/seal coating program. By selecting appropriate
rehabilitation methodologies and using a combination of contractual and inhouse paving by the Public Works Department, the Township hopes to resurface
over five miles of streets and rejuvenate ten to fifteen miles of streets in 2016.
The streets scheduled for 2016 resurfacing are:

For the third year in a row, Morgan Excavating will be the contractor. Drainage
and preparatory work should begin in mid-May with milling and resurfacing
operations following shortly thereafter. Due to the extended school year, it is
not feasible to delay paving until school lets out and therefore coordination with
school transportation will occur. Paving work is anticipated to be completed
prior to the start of the new school year in early September as to minimize
conflicts with bus service. Prior to the actual start of work on each street, the
contractor will be hand-delivering notices to each affected household outlining
any special instructions regarding start dates, parking arrangements and vehicle
access. If you have any questions regarding this year’s paving program, please
contact Mark Zemaitis, Director of Engineering, at 724.941.4180.

Other Major
Construction
Projects
There are a number of significant projects
that are being completed by other agencies
that will impact traffic and cause detours.
Venetia Road Bridge—This work is
currently underway. Starting tentatively on
or about July 7, Venetia Road will be closed
at Church Hill to the bridge at the border
with Union Township for 6 weeks. This will
necessitate a detour. The official PennDOT
detour will be Bebout Road to McMurray Road
to Clifton Road to Rt. 88. Depending on the
size of vehicles, many residents will most likely
use Church Hill to Turkeyfoot to Route 88, or
Church Hill to Sugar Camp to Route 88.
West McMurray Road—PennDOT plans to
pave West McMurray Road this year starting
just west of Route 19 to Morganza Road. At
this time we do not have a start date.
Bebout and Valley Brook Roads—
PennDOT plans to do significant work on
these roads in the form of base repair and
paving certain sections, this will involve traffic
restrictions. At this time, we do not have any
time periods.
Utilities—Columbia Gas, Pennsylvania
American Water and PT Sanitary Authority
are completing projects in Peters. Columbia
gas has started work on West McMurray,
Crestview, Moore and Phillips. They will also
be replacing lines on Oakwood and many
of the side streets off of Oakwood. This
will start as soon as they are done with the
West McMurray area. In addition, during
the summer, they will be working on East
McMurray from Lindenvale to Thomas Road
and many of the side streets.
The water company will be replacing a
water line the entire length of Gateshead
Drive. This work should have started by the
publishing of this article.
The Sanitary Authority will be conducting
a pipe lining project on East McMurray Road
and behind lots on Tanglewood and Trinity
Drive. Some work will occur at night so as not
to interfere with McMurray Road Traffic. This
project is out for bid and will start once school
is out.
Storm Sewers—The Township is out to bid
for 2 major storm sewer projects. One is a pipe
lining project on Clubview Drive and Bethany
Drive. The bid opening was May 2. The other
is a major repair to an arch culvert pipe under
Arrowhead Trail near Sugar Camp Road. The
project is expected to be bid in mid May.
