Looking at Lincoln:
Political Cartoons
from the Civil War
Era Exhibit
Aug. 30 through Sept. 27
Wednesday, Aug. 3, 7 to 8:45 p.m.
Presented by: Larry Woods
Hockey has a rich and interesting history
in Pittsburgh from its 19th century beginnings
in Oakland to the Civic Arena to the Consol
Energy Center. Amateur hockey with the
Yellow Jackets, the minor leagues with the
Shamrocks and Hornets, the NHL with the
Pirates and Penguins, we have had it all and
the saga continues! At the end of the program,
two lucky winners will be chosen at random to
win a pair of free tickets to the Heinz History
Center, compliments of the Center.
Larry Woods is a volunteer at the Heinz History Center. He shares his love of
a variety of historical topics of local interest with guests to the center as well as
through outreach presentations to the larger Western PA community.
Community
Blood Drive
Wednesday, Aug. 24,
9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
This exhibit explores the Civil War and
issues of slavery through political cartoons
depicting Abraham Lincoln and his policies.
The cartoons are vividly biting and invite
the viewer to put aside 21st century
assumptions and look at events through
the eyes of people living in the era. As
Americans continue to debate the legacy of
slavery, these cartoons provide a historical
reference for current events.
This exhibit comes to the library
courtesy of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of
American History.
