IN Norwin Winter 2018 | Page 36

R ed Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign, and was observed nationwide October 22-31, 2018. Locally, substance abuse and addiction continue to be serious problems. That is why Norwin schools continue to participate in Red Ribbon Week, working toward the goal of a drug-free Norwin community. Numerous events occurred within Norwin schools. Superintendent William Kerr shared information about the Norwin Reality Tour, a monthly dramatization of the consequences of drug abuse, with Norwin parents. He also provided parents with a documentary-style video that was created to raise awareness about the public health epidemic of opioid addictions. The video, available at www. norwinsd.org (under Parents and Community), features footage of Norwin student-athletes and interviews with Norwin coaches, principals, and administrators, as well as representatives of Excela Health and the North Huntingdon Township Police Department. We highly encourage all members of the greater Norwin community to view the video and its potentially life-saving message. The School District’s K-12 Operation Prevention Advisory Committee (OPAC), now in its 2nd year, invites any interested parent or student to attend the Committee Meetings or join their email list. Future meeting dates are Wednesday, November 14, 2018; Wednesday, January 16, 2019; and Wednesday, March 20, 2019. Meetings are held from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. in the Hillcrest Intermediate School library. Interested parents and students are asked to email Mr. Tim McCabe, Norwin Coordinator of Drug and Alcohol Awareness and Prevention, at [email protected], and Ms. Kathy Herchko, High School secretary, at kherchko@ norwinsd.org. We encourage you to observe Red Ribbon Week’s underlying drug-free mission all year long to help our young people and our community to secure a strong, vibrant, and drug-free future. Left to Right: Hillcrest students Megan Friday, Mason Kugler, and Olivia Baer are joined by North Huntingdon Township Police Department Officer Ted Kukich at Hillcrest Intermediate School’s entrance for Red Ribbon Week.
