“GLOBAL SCHOLARS”
Six Norwin High School seniors completed the
intensive requirements for the school’s new Global
Scholars program, which aims to develop global
awareness and competency and better prepare
students for personal and professional success in
an increasingly global society.
Norwin High School’s inaugural Global Scholars
are:
• Haley Arbore
• Eimile McKinnon
• Sebastian Pratt
• Mallory Page
• Natalie Durmis
• Taylor Napierkowski
As Global Scholars, they received a certificate
and Global Scholar honor cords to wear at
graduation. Mrs. Danielle Llerena, Chair of the
Norwin World Language Department, said their
achievement also helps these students to stand

hard work and academic excellence with
a special luncheon held each year in
May at the Stratigos Banquet Centre in
North Huntingdon.
The Excellence in Education Luncheon
is held each year to honor the top
20 students or top 5 percent of the
graduating class from Norwin High
School, whichever is greater, based
on the class standing at the end of
their junior year. The Excellence in
Education Program is sponsored by the
Norwin Chamber of Commerce and
Norwin School District through their
“Partners in Progress” initiative, which
seeks to expose students to career
opportunities. Chamber members
and the local business community
sponsored the students’ lunches and
gifts. Congratulations to all!

out from other outstanding applicants at Ivy League or other top universities
or employers.
To earn the distinction, the six students had to:
• Take four years of the same world language at the High School;
• Take four additional credits of classes that are global in nature (e.g., Social
Studies / Cultures of the World);
• Perform a minimum of 20 hours of service (e.g., tutoring others in World
Language); and
• Conduct at least eight literature/media reviews, four of which had to be
books.
These students have shown ambition, dedication, and initiative to have
completed all of the components in a short time frame because this was
Norwin High School’s inaugural year for the program, said Dr. Jan Hostler
Stewart, administrator of the Global Scholars Program for the Pennsylvania
State Modern Language Association (PSMLA).
