Two students from Norwin High School’ s Model United Nations Club received honorable mention in their conference representing Haiti and two other students took first place for the same conference representing North Korea.

The Model UN is a club that is geared towards creating a better understanding of world problems and events. The Model UN provides students with the opportunity to take on the role of a United Nations member and participate in different discussions and conferences where the problems are debated. The club also provides students with the chance to improve their speaking and debating skills since they will be required to speak in front of large groups of people at conferences.
This school year, the club has attended four conferences( two at the University of Pittsburgh, one at Duquesne University, and one at Westminster University). Erin Crust and ReidAnn Sever represented North Korea at Westminster and took first place for their conference. Brock Shaffer and Jacob Iwinski received honorable mention representing Haiti. Club founders Sydney Schock and Stephanie Blenko advocated the creation of the club to promote cultural awareness and world issues. They were the president and vice president this year and attended every conference.
Thousands of middle school, high school, and college students across the country and around the world participate in Model United Nations, which involves substantial researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, as well as critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
Club Sponsor Mrs. Larissa Sturm said attending the conferences has been rewarding for her and her students.
“ I was able to see how their hard work paid off and how proud they were when they were able to get a position paper passed,” Mrs. Sturm said.“ I also enjoyed watching the students make friends from different districts. It’ s great to see how an extracurricular activity can help bring students together to discuss important matters that concern not only our country but every country around the world.”
