TakeOff is a race to honor DUI victims, raise awareness about the seriousness of impaired driving and encourage the community to have a positive influence in the reduction of impaired driving. On average, an impaired driver kills someone every 50 minutes. In the case of Pennsylvania State Trooper Kenton Iwaniec, a Westmoreland County native and Saint Vincent College graduate, he was killed by a drunk driver just moments after completing his shift at the Avondale Barracks on March 28, 2008. Over 10,000 families each year are destroyed by impaired drivers. All profits from the TakeOff race will go to the purchase of Preliminary Breath Test Devices (PBTs) for the Pennsylvania State Police and other law enforcement agencies throughout the commonwealth. To date, the Trooper Iwaniec Memorial Foundation has donated over 1,600 PBTs. Last year’s race was a tremendous success. With over 1,500 participants, the organization was able to raise nearly $100,000. Questions? Email [email protected]. THREE NORWIN BAND STUDENTS MARCHED IN MACY’S GREAT AMERICAN MARCHING BAND Three students from Norwin High School were selected to perform in the 2018 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. Senior clarinet player Tommy Kratzenberg, senior saxophone icmags.com player Kate Heuer, and freshman trombone player Grace Heuer auditioned for the Macy’s Great American Marching Band and were selected from hundreds of students nationwide. “Tommy has had an amazing experience marching with Macy’s band. He was selected his sophomore year as well, and has made lasting friendships from all over the United States,” says his mother Ann Kratzenberg, who is also secretary of the Norwin Band Aides, a parent support group. “It’s a testament to the quality of the music education at Norwin,” says Kathleen Heuer, mother of Kate and Grace, and also a member of the Norwin Band Aides. “The Norwin Band program prepares students not only for opportunities like this on a national stage, but to succeed in whatever they choose.” The students are under the direction of Norwin High School band directors Tim Daniels and Brandon Kandrack, and study privately with Kevin McManus and Greg Ondayko. The Norwin High School Band is fresh off victories as Class AA champions at the 2018 Bands of America Northeast Regional Championship in Canton, Ohio; and as champions of the 2018 Bands of America Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship in Newark, Delaware. The Macy’s Great American Marching Band was under the direction of Auburn University’s Dr. Richard Good and assisted by talented music educators from across the country. The 185 musicians were complemented by approximately 40 flags and dancers. n
