illcrest fifth graders on Teams 5B and 5C read The Lemonade War
by Jacqueline Davies. In the book, Evan and his sister, Jessie, have
a lemonade war to see who can raise the most money at their
lemonade stands - winner takes all. For our Hillcrest Lemonade War, the
fifth grade girls acted as Team Jessie, the boys were Team Evan, and they
competed to see who could raise the most money for Andrew’s Avengers,
supporting others as they battle childhood cancer.
Fifth graders used many selling strategies learned from reading
the book The Lemonade War. They also used their own creative ideas
for raising money for this important cause. Some students worked
independently; others teamed up with friends, classmates, neighbors,
teammates, etc. Students raised money at school; students raised
money in their neighborhoods, at sporting events, at church, and outside
businesses in our community. Students held stands selling lemonade,
hot cocoa, and other treats; students raked leaves and did chores to earn
money. Students made bracelets and sold them. Students sold cut-out
lemons and Lemonhead candies to Hillcrest students and faculty to get
the whole school involved to show their support. So many brilliant ideas
were put into action!
Thanks to everybody’s efforts, together we raised almost $10,000 for a
very important cause, Andrew’s Avengers. Students realized that they are
not too young to help make a difference! Congratulations Team 5B and 5C
students!
