Sheridan Terrace Blooms and Grows: Students Harvest Learning and Produce
This spring, students from Mrs. Grissom’ s, Mrs. McNally’ s, and Mrs. Slivka’ s classes planted the first seeds in what has become a flourishing outdoor classroom at Sheridan Terrace Elementary. With the support of the 4th Grade Peer Buddy Club, who helped upgrade the garden beds and prepare the space, the Sheridan Terrace Blooms and Grows Garden has transformed from an ambitious idea into a thriving hub of hands-on learning.
Over the past few months, students have watched their hard work come full circle. Bright blooms and green vines now cover the garden beds, while tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, potatoes, herbs, strawberries, and more are ready for harvest. Alongside the vegetables, colorful flowers brighten the garden, showcasing both beauty and purpose.
What began as lessons on soil, seeds, and the plant life cycle has grown into much more. This fall, students are learning how to harvest crops, measure supply and demand, and even market their produce at the school’ s own Blooms and Grows Farmers Market. Staff members
are invited to purchase freshly picked vegetables, giving students the chance to experience how food travels from the garden to the table while also practicing math, communication, and social skills.
The learning doesn’ t stop at the garden gate. Some of the produce will be brought into the classroom for cooking lessons, giving students the opportunity to prepare and taste the foods they’ ve grown. This farm-to-table connection helps students understand nutrition, responsibility, and the satisfaction of enjoying something they’ ve nurtured from seed to harvest.
The Sheridan Terrace Blooms and Grows Garden has become more than just a project; it’ s a living classroom that combines science, teamwork, and real-world skills. With each harvest, students are not only collecting baskets of fresh produce but also cultivating knowledge, responsibility, and pride in their work.
Sheridan Terrace is proving that when students get their hands dirty, the lessons take root and grow far beyond the classroom. orwin
