PREPARING FOR WINTER WEATHER
As summer comes to an end , we are again faced with the thought of impending winter weather . Allow me to express some concern for our residents , especially senior citizens , during those blustery , icy , cold winter days .
Please use good judgment when venturing outdoors during hazardous weather conditions . The mail and the paper can wait . Notify someone you trust to assist you if the snow needs to be shoveled , salt applied to your sidewalk , or if you need a ride to an appointment . None of these are worth a couple of weeks in the hospital and several months of physical therapy !
I am in constant contact with Medic One and attend the Emergency Management Team meetings . Reports show that Medic One transports seniors to the hospital almost daily for slips and falls during icy conditions !
Instead of grocery shopping when it ’ s icy outside , consider a meal delivery service , Meals-On-Wheels , or asking a friend or family member to shop for you .
Leave the snow where it falls ! Strenuous activities like snow shoveling may strain the heart and can cause slips and falls . Allow Mother Nature to take it away while you stay warm and safe indoors .
Everyone should be prepared for winter travel ! Stock your car with a first aid kit , extra warm clothes , boots , jumper cables , water , ice scraper , shovel , rock salt or kitty litter , snacks , flashlight and a map . By preparing for the worst , winter travels will be bearable if you are stuck in traffic or find yourself in a snowstorm unable to make it home .
Leave in ample time and avoid icy roads . If a snowstorm is predicted , consider staying home to avoid potential accidents . Also , not travelling during a snowstorm allows road crews to quickly plow and clear the roads .
