WHAT’S NEWS IN MT. LEBANON MLJWC will hold its major club event—“Viva el Bingo!”—in March with a portion of the proceeds benefiting YWBCAF. The event will take place on Saturday, March 28, at the Bethel Park Community Center. The event co-chairs are Becky Dearing and Jill Loughridge. MT. LEBANON JUNIOR WOMEN’S CLUB ANNOUNCES ANNUAL BENEFICIARY The Mt. Lebanon Junior Women’s Club (MLJWC) announced its 2019- 20 Major Grant Beneficiary: the Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation (YWBCAF). “The Young Women’s Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation is a 501(c)(3) that educates, supports and provides small financial grants to women under 45 in Pittsburgh with breast cancer. We are thrilled with this partnership as not only [is MLJWC] a powerful group of caring women, but [they] are the exact target we want to speak to regarding breast health,” said Jennifer Kehm, co-founder of the YWBCAF. “When we were created,” Kehm adds, “the mission was to make sure all women and physicians were aware that young women can and do get breast cancer. Young women can many times be diagnosed at later stages, making the challenge much greater. We lose 116 women a day to breast cancer. The survivors in their 20s and 30s are often isolated, lonely, saddled with fertility issues, employment issues and medical leave challenges, trying to manage young children and many times are left with a lifetime of financial challenge.” Founded in July 2005, YWBCAF is deeply committed to bringing breast cancer awareness to women under 45. To increase awareness, it regularly partners with local groups and organizes events during the month of October, such as Pink Ribbon Bagels, Lanterns of Hope and PINK OUT events held at local high school athletic functions. 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ MILLER NAMED ‘LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR’ FOR WORK ON EDUCATION Rep. Dan Miller, D-Mt. Lebanon, chair of the House Allegheny County Democratic Delegation, was recently named “Legislator of the Year” by the Pennsylvania School Counselors Association for his work in supporting and advocating for professional support services in schools. “About a decade ago our school districts were decimated in several important academic areas, as well as in key student support fields,” Miller said. “House Bill 1500, which I introduced with Rep. Thomas Murt, R-Phila./ Montgomery, attempts to close this shortfall by requiring a full complement of school counselors, psychologists, social workers and nurses to ensure that access to help is never a problem and caseload management is never an issue.” He continued, “Research shows the overwhelming positive impact of ensuring that every student feels supported by at least one caring adult; and for so many, that need is met in school. However, in time of elevated need, required teaching and mandated testing, it is unreasonable to expect teachers to fill all of these voids—and of course, teachers are not counselors. Whether for undiagnosed mental health, the impact of trauma, the challenges of isolation, or the anxiety often associated with today’s learning, our kids need access to timely and professional support.” The Pennsylvania School Counselors Association is a professional organization, which represents school counseling icmags.com in Pennsylvania, whose mission is to expand the image and influence of professional school counselors, to promote professional and ethical practice, and to advocate for equity and access for all students. House Bill 1500 is currently awaiting action in the House Education Committee.
