It’ s All About Teamwork

No team wins a championship with the efforts of one individual. It’ s more about the cohesiveness of great members working together for excellence. Working out the best plan for treating your sports injury is the same way. If you have people who excel at what they do and are willing to listen to your unique needs and challenges— that’ s a great start toward a positive outcome.

Dr. Anthony Mustovich of Sports Medicine & Joint Replacement played high school football and experienced some sports injuries of his own at Seneca Valley. His early athletic pursuits and experience sparked an interest in the best methods for recovering quickly from the injuries that sometimes happen.
“ Regardless of their age, most people who come in with a sports injury are unique in that they were doing something they love,” says Dr. Mustovich.“ Now they’ re sidelined, and the thing that they love is causing them real physical pain. It’ s one of the most rewarding things about my job to be able to get them back to their activities as quickly as possible, so they can start to enjoy life again.”
He emphasizes that there’ s no set road to recovery for everyone.“ We take a very individualized approach to each person, taking into account their lifestyle, their expectations and what their long-term goals are. Surgery is not the answer to every injury … I’ m committed to using the latest advancements and technologies to get my patients back to the activities they love. I try to treat them as if they were my own family member, and to provide them with options that will not only get them moving again, but can possibly help prevent future injuries.
“ With the advent of biologics, we are seeing more non-operative treatments for patients,” he notes. Biologics encompass a wide range of treatment options that include human, animal and synthetically produced appliances that can restore function.
Over the years, Dr. Mustovich has not only treated a variety of sports injuries, but a variety of other conditions. He served in the Army for 11 years in general surgery and as a flight surgeon, stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas; Ft. Wainwright, Alaska; and the Eisenhower Army Medical Center. His years in the service have given him wide-ranging experience in treating musculoskeletal complaints, brought about by mishaps or the daily wear and tear of joints and ligaments producing chronic pain.
Dr. Mustovich has returned to Pittsburgh to be near his family and longtime friends, serving the community that he calls home.“ There are a lot of different ways to approach a challenge, and the patients are all different. We’ re osteopathic physicians, but we treat the whole person, in mind, body and spirit.”
