Proofing our Gardens 7 p. m., Tuesday, September 27
Using techniques based on both integrated pest management and natural-care gardening, speaker Jessica Walliser will provide strategies that enable gardeners to manage any pest troubles safely, effectively and organically. Information about biological, botanical, physical, and mechanical controls will be offered. Walliser is a co-host of“ The Organic Gardeners” on KDKA Radio and a gardening columnist for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Nature is all around us, even right in our own backyards. In this program, we will discover what kinds of fascinating stories might be going on right outside the back door and what signs of life you can look for. We’ ll also look for ways to make your yard more wildlife friendly. Join Gabi Hughes, environmental educator at the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, for this family-friendly program.

Creating a natural balance in our backyards is tricky business. How do we create a sanctuary and co-exist with all the other creatures that are attracted to our yards? Pesticides, chemicals, predators, and human intervention can have a disturbing effect on our fragile ecosystem. There are simple ways to create a relaxing enjoyable space for ourselves and nature( while maintaining good relations with our neighbors). Presenter Faith Starr is a nutritional therapist, naturalist, wild foods advocate, and herbalist.
Fly Tying Workshops with Allegheny Fly

Allegheny Fly Tyers will offer two chances to take a three-part beginner class. Learn techniques to tie proven trout patterns that work on every stream. This four-part series is a collaborative effort to honor those who have served and those who continue to serve our country. Presented by the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon, the Denis Theatre Foundation, the Mt. Lebanon School District, and Mt. Lebanon Public Library.
THE POETRY OF WAR 7 p. m., Wednesday, October 19
Poet Kathleen Swazuk will read selections from her work Wartorn Heart, a collection of poems and art inspired by the Vietnam War. The book will be available for purchase. Kathleen was a 19-year-old junior in nursing school when she joined the Army Student Nurse Program. Two years later she was in Vietnam, seeing and experiencing the horrors of war. She hid the memories and her pain of that time in the poems in this book, which have been lovingly illustrated by artists in a variety of mediums.
WAR IN FILM 7 p. m., Thursday, October 27
Elaine Wertheim of the Denis Theatre Foundation will lead the viewing and discussion of Paths of Glory( 1957), the acclaimed Stanley Kubrick film that explores the theme of power. Set in the trenches of WWI, this film captures the tension and terror of combat. The stunning black and white cinematography highlights the realism of the story. Kirk Douglas gives a flawless performance in this landmark movie.
WAR IN FILM 7 p. m., Wednesday, November 2
Elaine Wertheim of the Denis Theatre Foundation will lead the viewing and discussion of The Quiet American( 2002). Based on the Graham Greene novel of the same name, this movie gives insight into the beginning of America’ s involvement in Vietnam. Set in Saigon in 1952, the story is told through the eyes of world-weary journalist Thomas Fowler( Michael Cain). His comfortable life is altered by the arrival of young aid worker Alden Pyle( Brendan Fraser). Part love story and part cautionary
