THE SOCIETY NEWS All the latest information on the Monroeville Historical Society. k By Robert Elms MHS Welcomes Summer Visitors T he Monroeville Historical Society (MHS) has two general missions: (1) to help preserve our community’s heritage and (2) to educate the public as to our common history. As warmer weather approaches, our thoughts center on outside activities. Monroeville is very fortunate to have several historical landmarks. In particular, a stone house and a log house whose history goes back to the Early American time period. These houses are furnished with Early American period items. Also, the historical homes’ site has a functional outside beehive oven similar to Early American period design. The Society uses this oven for baking and cooking. The historical homes’ site offers many hands-on educational opportunities. The Society encourages local schools to consider scheduling a spring field trip to visit the historical homes. Students can experience churning cream into butter and tasting that butter on freshly baked bread from our beehive oven. Students can see and touch a straw mattress supported by a rope on a period bed frame, and much more. Another Historical Landmark includes the Old Stone Church, first built on the site in 1834. The 1834 church was dismantled, rebuilt and rededicated on the site in 1896. This building was an active church until 1970 when it was given to the Municipality of Monroeville as a recognized Historic Landmark. A guided tour of the Old Stone Church and the adjacent Crossroads Cemetery is being offered by the Monroeville Parks and Recreation Department on June 16. This tour will be given by Louis and Lynn Chandler, members of the Monroeville Historical For more information about the Monroeville Historical Society.
