GROWING GREEN LEADERS:
Inside the Compost Center’ s First-Ever Student Internship Program
This summer, the Compost Center proudly launched its first-ever Student Internship Program, welcoming intern Ellyse Hope— a passionate and driven student who brought fresh energy, insight, and creativity to our operations.
Over the course of the internship, Ellyse worked closely with staff on a range of projects, from hands-on composting work to environmental data analysis. Her final presentation highlighted several key contributions, including a carbon impact report showing that composting 5,000 tons of leaves— rather than landfilling them— can prevent up to 1,900 metric tons of CO₂ emissions, reinforcing composting’ s critical role in climate action.
She also monitored compost pile temperatures, which ranged from 110 to 150 ° F— essential data that helps optimize decomposition and ensure safe, nutrient-rich compost. On the outreach side, Ellyse created a series of eye-catching social media graphics and videos that helped spread our composting message to the wider community.
Ellyse is now continuing her environmental journey at Gannon University, and we wish her the best of luck in her future academic career.
Based on this year’ s success, we’ re excited to offer the internship again next summer for students interested in sustainability and hands-on experience.

Stay tuned for more ways to get involved at the Compost Center! illcreek
