In an age where compassion and understanding are essential in policing , the introduction of therapy dogs into police departments is becoming a growing trend across the nation . The latest addition to this heartwarming movement is Tucker , a golden retriever whose journey from a shelter to a service role exemplifies the power of love and support in our communities .
A Journey to Service
Tucker was just a 9-week-old pup when he was surrendered to the Erie Humane Society , but his gentle disposition and friendly temperament quickly identified him as an ideal candidate for therapy dog training . With the unwavering support of Supervisor Clear and Chief Mook , the Millcreek Police Department collaborated with the Erie Humane Society to find a canine companion who could make a difference .
After nearly two years of rigorous training under the guidance of trainer Michelle Elwell from Redefine Canine Training , LLC ., Tucker emerged ready to serve . His official welcome into the police department took place at the Erie Humane Society Rock-n-Rescue Fundraiser on August 10 , 2024 , where he was ceremoniously gifted to the department through the Veterans Shelter to Service program .

With a dedicated team of six officers trained to handle him , Tucker has become a beloved member of the police force . He works an 8-hour shift at the station , seamlessly integrating into the daily activities of the department . His duties are diverse and impactful , ranging from attending community events like Touch-A-Truck and Coffee with a Cop to providing emotional support during sensitive interviews , particularly with youth .
Tucker ’ s presence at memorial services and community events fosters a comforting atmosphere , allowing citizens to connect with law enforcement on a more personal level . His gentle demeanor has proven invaluable , especially in building trust with victims as they navigate the difficult process of giving interviews or testifying .
