Protecting You from the Inside Out

The staff of Millcreek Paramedic Service would like to remind our residents of some summer safety tips to help avoid several emergency situations we encounter each year .

Heat Exhaustion occurs when our body loses salt and electrolytes . The first sign of heat exhaustion is often leg cramping . The patient should immediately move to a cool area and drink fluids , preferably water . If ignored , heat exhaustion can quickly lead to heat stroke .
Signs heat stroke is occurring is when the body stops sweating and cannot properly cool itself . Evidence of heat stroke is red , hot , and dry skin , a rapid pulse , headache , confusion and dizziness . In the early stages of heat stroke , place the patient in a cool area . Place cool wet cloth ’ s on the neck and in the severe cases call 911 . You may increase the cooling process by placing ice packs on the back of the neck , at the area of the arm pits and groin . Other cooling measures can be wrapping the patient in a wet thin sheet or light blanket or placing the decedent in a cool shower or tub of water .

Insect bites and bee stings are also a common emergency we encounter . Many people are already aware of their potential severe allergic reactions to bee stings and carry and EPI pen for immediate self-administered treatment . This is a true emergency and if you suffer these reactions , call 911 immediately . Signs of an allergic reaction include hives , dizziness due to a decrease in blood pressure , and swelling of the throat causing difficulty breathing . If you experience multiple stings , the reactions will most likely be worse . Skin Cancer from sun damage effects one in five Americans over the course of a lifetime . Each year over 3 million people are treated for skin cancer . Sunscreen should be utilized by everyone to avoid sun damage to the skin and decrease the possibility of skin cancer .
We must be especially cautious to monitor our children during that hot summer months to sun exposure especially during sporting events or while enjoying the beautiful Lake Erie shoreline .
Should you find your child has been swimming too long , it is likely their body temperature has fallen . You will find the child shivering and cyanosis , or a blue color at their lips . Remove the child from the water and rewarm them until their temperature returns to normal .
