MUSIC OF THE WORLD, A CREATIVE ARTS RESIDENCY

LifeWorks Erie has received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging to expand and improve our Creativity Matters program. The primary goal of this program is to improve the health and wellness of older adults in the Erie region. Our Creativity Matters Program offers various techniques taught by professional artists.

The Creativity Matters program is divided into three sessions: Spring, Summer and Fall. There will be one artist residency and three art workshops offered each session. Through this grant, all art supplies are provided and the cost of the programs will be significantly reduced. All courses are designed for beginners or accomplished artists. The majority of the classes last four to eight weeks. Planned classes include watercolor painting, textile art, digital photography, multicultural instruments and much more.
Our first residency,“ Music of the World,” begins during our Spring Lifelong Learning session. This seven-session program takes place at LifeWorks Erie( 406 Peach Street) on Thursdays, March 23rd through May 4th, from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. The first session is free so that participants can meet the instructors and get an overview of the course. Every culture uses music to celebrate and to soothe. Participants will experience songs, instruments and dance from Nepal, India, Bhutan, Africa and Europe. This course is led by Bhutan master musician, Gyan Ghising and American folklorist, Kelly Armor, with a special guest appearance by Tansana Camara, a West African harpist and drummer. To register, call 814.453.5072.
Gyan Ghising was born in Bhutan. At age 10, he fled with his parents to Eastern Nepal to escape the tyrannical government of Bhutan. He spent 20 years there as a refugee. In Nepal he learned music, dance, drama, painting and creative writing. In 2011 he
came to America with the goal of teaching his folk arts to American students in order to make America rich in culture and diversity. He is skilled at playing bamboo flutes, drums and the guitar. He is also a singer.
Kelly Armor has been a professional folk musician and storyteller for over 20 years. Kelly is currently the Folk Art and Education Director at the Erie Art Museum. She lived in East Africa for more than two years which sparked her love and interest in oral tradition. She specializes in Appalachian, Celtic, maritime and East African music, along with storytelling, songwriting and instrument making.

Tasana Camara is a drummer, dancer and singer from Sierra Leone. He has toured West Africa, Europe and the United States performing and teaching children and adults. He believes that music can help children learn cooperation, release energy and grow strong mentally and physically. Tasana currently resides in Oil City. illcreek
