Water meters play a critical role in helping businesses and homeowners understand, manage, and conserve water usage. Meter technicians work outdoors in all weather conditions to collect meter data, inspect meters for damage or tampering, turn water service on and off when necessary, investigate high-use concerns, and help identify potential leaks. Every water meter is read at least once each quarter throughout the year.
Erie Water Works utilizes several methods of meter reading to efficiently collect water consumption data across its service area. Approximately 54,864 meters are equipped with automated meter reading technology, representing nearly 88 % of the system. These meters transmit readings by radio signal, allowing technicians to efficiently collect consumption data. An additional 7,439 meters are read manually using handheld devices and touchpad systems. These meters are generally located in areas where automated reading technology is not yet practical.

Accurate water metering is essential to ensuring customers are billed fairly based on their actual water consumption. Water meters also help identify abnormal usage patterns that may indicate leaks within plumbing systems. Undetected leaks can waste thousands of gallons of water each year, resulting in unnecessary costs associated with the treatment and delivery of water. By helping customers detect and address leaks early, the Meter Department supports water conservation efforts, protects valuable water resources, and promotes responsible water use throughout the community.
