Peach Street & Interchange Road Corridor Upgrades
Smart Signals, Smarter Streets Millcreek and Summit Townships have joined forces with PennDOT District-01 to modernize one of Erie County’ s busiest corridors— Peach Street. Backed by PennDOT’ s Green Light-Go grant program, the multi-phase project began in 2022 with an initial $ 230,000 grant, of which Millcreek was reimbursed 80 %. The effort focuses on rebuilding outdated infrastructure, upgrading intersections with fiber optics and new signal cabinets, and installing 360-degree cameras to detect and respond to vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists in real time. ALL intersections are currently communicating with one another— paving the way for a fully responsive traffic network. illcreek

Tech-Powered Progress Throughout 2023 and 2024, the townships laid miles of fiber, installed radios along Zuck, Zimmerly, Interchange, and Robison roads, and upgraded detection systems that can track and count traffic volumes, bikes, and pedestrians. All work was completed in-house to reduce costs. Both townships mirrored their efforts from Hershey to Kuntz Road, and Peach to Zuck Road establishing full corridor communication. New cabinets were installed at key intersections like Avon / Peach and Wendy’ s / Peach replacing outdated systems that no longer connected properly.
Looking Ahead In 2025, Millcreek and Summit applied for a joint $ 400,000 TST grant— fully funded by PennDOT— to finalize advanced detection zones and integrate them into the broader traffic system. As the project nears completion, traffic electrician specialists for Summit and Millcreek— Michael Hanas and Jeff Tenney— are focusing on monitoring and refining the system.“ This traffic-responsive AI technology continuously monitors vehicle volume and adjusts signals in real time to move traffic more efficiently,” Traffic Bureau Chief, Jeff Tenney said. With this initiative, Millcreek and Summit are now aligned with the latest PennDOT standards— bringing state-of-the-art transportation infrastructure to the region.
“ I live in Millcreek and just wanted to compliment whoever, AI included, improved the traffic flow on Peach Street. It’ s finally so much easier to navigate, even getting onto Peach Street is noticeably better. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
My grandson recently relocated from Pittsburgh, and even he commented on how much smoother the drive is— and he’ s a young adult! We can now get through four to five traffic lights in a row without stopping. It’ s a big improvement. Thank you again!”
