A: The simple answer is NO. All recycling should now be placed LOOSE into 65-gallon recycle toters, 25-gallon recycle bins, and in all commercial recycling dumpsters. In the past, the Millcreek Township Recycling Department had instructed residents to bag recycling in 33-gallon clear/ transparent bags in the event of windy days, excess volume of recycling, etc. However, best practices for improving the recycling process are changing locally, nationally, and globally. Plastic bags (including small grocery store bags and large 33-gallon bags) are contaminating the recycling stream. Plastic bags cause many issues for the Material Recovery Facility where all single stream recyclables are sorted and separated. Plastic bags (large and small) not only wrap around and jam the equipment’s conveyor belts and gears, but also infiltrate the other bales of plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, and metal. Environmentally, plastic bags contribute to littering and do not decompose quickly. As we work on transitioning our recycling behavior at home and at work, please be sure to rinse recyclable items of food waste and any leftover residue! This will help keep all recyclables in the bin free of debris. This will also keep your recycle bin in good condition with minimal odors. If you recently purchased clear bags from the Millcreek Township Recycling Department, you may finish using the remainder of the roll to bag recycling at this time. Upon completion of the roll, please begin altering your recycling methods. Clear bags are still permitted for containing leaves during leaf collection weeks. To obtain your first FREE 65-gallon recycling toter, please call Advanced Disposal at 1-844-415-5970. To obtain a FREE 25-gallon recycling bin with lid, please visit Millcreek Township at 3608 West 26th Street. Please help us keep the recycling stream clean by keeping plastic bags out! —Jessica Stutzman, Millcreek Township Recycling Coordinator To have your recycling questions answered by Millcreek’s Recycling Coordinator, please submit an email to [email protected] or call 814-833-1111 ext. 317.
