at State FBLA Conference
Four members of Mars Area High School’s FBLA
(Future Business Leaders of America) Chapter
placed at the 2017-2018 Pennsylvania FBLA State
Leadership Conference, held April 9 through 11 in
Hershey, Pa.
The team of senior Ashley Parham and juniors
Alexis Bonifate and Anastasia Bonifate earned second place in
the Marketing competition and qualified for the 2017-2018 FBLA
National Leadership Conference, to be held June 26 through July 2
in Baltimore, MD.
Junior Matthew Olsen took sixth place in Accounting 2
competition. Other students who competed at the state conference
are freshman Andrew Riska (Intro to Financial Math) and the team
of seniors Luke Diel and Chase Reck (Global Business).
FBLA is a non-profit educational association of students
preparing for careers in business or simply interested in learning

Students’ Doodles Selected for Contest Submission

Doodle 4 Google Contest. At left, are

Three Mars Area Elementary School students were selected as Grade Level Winners of
the school’s Doodle 4 Google Contest.
The winning doodles drawn by fourth-grader Addison Orehowsky, third-grader
Brynn Williams and second-grader Zacharias Yohe were recreated as part of a display
in the school main lobby. The three students works along with those by fourth-graders
Sarah Arnold and Elizabeth Kelly; third-graders Mei Lien Mansfield and Jeong Hyeon
Park; and second-grader Carter Kohnen were also chosen to be submitted to the Doodle
4 Google Contest.
As part of the contest, students were asked to create doodles based on this year’s
contest theme, “What Inspires Me?” Winners selected by Google may have their doodle
featured as an interactive experience on Google.com.

Annual Art Show
Student Works Featured in
Numerous works by Mars Area students were selected
for the Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV 29th annual
Student Arts Exhibit at Grove City College’s Pew Fine
Arts Center.
Senior Dorothy Mae Thornton received the Viewer’s
Choice award for her piece, “Paradise.” Other students
whose artworks were selected for the exhibit are seniors
Jake Bishop, Clayton Goupil and Jacob Wright;
juniors John Carpenter, Ben King and Catherine
Viale; sophomore Hunter Lawther; eighth-graders
Hunter Foulk, Katelynn Fromlak, Trevor Relue, Paige
Stafford and Olivia Waldrop; and seventh-graders
Griffen Cherry and Gavin Unruh.
The exhibit remained on display from 8 a.m. to 8
p.m., Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturdays through April 21.The Pittsburgh Penguins

Perform at
PMEA All-State
Festival
Three Mars Area High
School students were
selected by solo audition
to perform in the 2018
Pennsylvania Music
Educators Association (PMEA)
All-State Festival, held April 18 through 21, at the Lancaster Host
Resort & Convention Center (Lancaster, PA).
Senior Michelle Manukas (flute) and junior Jacob Smith
(trombone) performed with the All-State Concert Band, conducted
by Dr. Andrew Yozviak, West Chester University of Pennsylvania
director of bands.
Juniors Sarah Grimm (clarinet) performed with the All-State
Orchestra, conducted by Raphael Jiménez, Oberlin College &
Conservatory director of orchestras.
The event included several public concerts on Saturday, April 21,
at J.P. McCaskey High School (Lancaster, PA). All-State Concert Band
performed at 10:30 a.m. and All-State Orchestra at 2 p.m.
