SPRING TREASURE HUNT COMMUNITY FLEA MARKET JOIN THE 2016 GREAT AMERICAN CLEANUP OF PA The 2016 Great American Cleanup of PA began Mar. 1 and runs through May 31. During this period, registered events can get trash bags, gloves and safety vests from PennDOT district offices, while supplies last. Events include litter cleanups, illegal dump cleanups, beautification projects, special collections and educational events. As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor “Let’s Pick It Up PA” – every day from Apr. 16 to May 9. During the Pick It Up PA days, registered events will be able to take the trash collected during their cleanup to participating landfills for reduced or free disposal. LOCAL YOUNG ARTIST CREATES BEAUTIFUL ART FOR A GREAT CAUSE EAGLE SCOUT HONORED FOR CAT BOX PROJECT A special Court of Honor award ceremony was held on Dec. 15, 2015, by Boy Scout Troop 195 of St. Catherine of Sweden Church to recognize Gordon Anthony Arch for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. Arch is currently a senior at Hampton High School. For his community service project, Gordon constructed 45 “cat boxes” for Animal Friends to be used in each cat cage as a comfy zone and/or hideaway, as well as a fun box for the cats to climb and play on. The project work was meticulous and involved over 294 hours of labor. Guest speakers at the ceremony included representatives from The American Legion, the U.S. Submarine Vets, U.S. Marine Corps, Scout Executive/CEO - Laurel Highlands Council, Chairman of the Japeechen District, the Senate and House of Representatives and a Hampton High School soccer coach. Maxx. The company held the contest for kids in 2015 to support “Save the Children,” a charity supported by T.J. Maxx for over three decades that provides assistance to 25% of children living in poverty all across the country. Twenty-five contest winners were named in the U.S., with just one winner from the state of Pennsylvania. All participants in the contest were 14 years old or younger, and submissions were judged based on how original, creative and applicable they were to the theme “What’s your favorite thing in the whole world?” “I was really surprised to be a winner and get so many cool prizes, but I felt even happier to know that the contest helps children,” says Osburg.
