summer weekend mornings. The beginner groups or those that include new riders usually meet in the afternoon. North Park is also where mountain bike riding groups gather. They begin at the swimming pool parking lot and explore trails throughout the park. Along with teaching the basics of competitive cycling, the group focuses on safety for all riders. For some, it’s about the fun of group rides in the great outdoors. For others, the best part is participating in competitive race events. Club organizers say these skills and experiences can foster a love of cycling that can last a lifetime. PITCHING IN “Like so many ‘club’ sports, we’re all volunteer with many adults playing support roles,” says Bedel. “Many are parents but others just want to contribute their time to grow our sport among the youth ranks.” Volunteers who are passionate about the sport pitch in to lead group rides for this not-for-profit organization. And parents of participating young cyclists are always encouraged to join in the group rides. Many volunteers are experienced riders themselves, and are there to offer advice and leadership to cyclists who are newer to the sport. Some are experienced road racers, while others have a background in mountain bike racing. And their efforts are clearly paying off. After just four years, the accolades are already piling up. Members of Team Citius have won numerous races, including PA State Road Championships, PA State Criterium Championships and the Pittsburgh Triathlon Sprint event.
