By Melissa Rayworth Cycling is a sport that can stay with you for a lifetime. And here in Hampton, kids between the ages of 10 and 18 have a unique opportunity to learn about competitive cycling and join a growing team that’s based right here. “Fred Gohh and I started a juniors cycling team in the area four years ago and it’s been gaining in popularity gradually over time,” says Mark Bedel, vice president of Team Citius Junior Cycling Team. “It offers a full range of cycling alternatives for the young cyclist to enter the sport and grow within it.” Bedel says that participants can build their skills “all the way into racing, if their interest drives them in that direction.” T H E D E TA I L S Team Citius is the premier program for junior cyclists in our region and includes 22 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE | Hampton members from all around Pittsburgh (and even a few living as far away as Martins Ferry, Ohio!). But the rides happen right here in our community. New riders often begin joining group rides in North Park, where groups gather at J.C. Stone Field or at Pie Traynor Field. From there, the groups set out on one of several local routes that can accommodate different levels of beginners. Group rides explore parts of Butler, Sewickley and other areas in the North Hills. These rides mainly take place on weekends during the warmer months. Thinking of joining in or signing up your kids? Be prepared to get up early if you’re a serious cyclist. Group rides for the more experienced riders tend to head out at either 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. on Photos by Fred Gohh.
