Steam Team
Offers Students
Opportunity
Beyond Once-
a-Week Class
T
he STEAM Team
is a group of fifth
graders at Hutchinson
Elementary who are interested
in extending their STEAM
knowledge beyond the once-
Mrs. Sparrow with the Hutchison Steam Team
a-week scheduled encore
STEAM class. STEAM class allows students to express their creativity and imagination
while using methods of inquiry and investigation.
All of the fifth graders had an opportunity to complete a job application to become
a member of this team. Team members report to the STEAM Lab each morning as the
school day is getting started. The team helps Mrs. Sparrow with tasks required to keep
the STEAM Lab’s devices in operating order. Students are responsible for replacing
batteries, taking inventory of the items in class kits, and even problem-solving what
might be wrong with defective devices.
They enjoy preparing materials for the daily K-5 activities and help younger students
complete STEAM challenges. Each day the students check the task list to see what needs
to be completed for the day. “I am busy in the STEAM Lending Library each morning,
so I rely on the STEAM Team to get the lab ready for students,” explains Mrs. Sparrow.
“They are a dynamic group of responsible young employees.” Mrs. Sparrow has been
so pleased with her “employees” that she awarded them a Christmas bonus of for their
dedication on the job.”
Senior Project Effort Sets Sights on
New Cubs Den Playground Equipment
K
asey Storkel, a senior at Greensburg Salem, is on a mission to revitalize the
playground area outside the child development room at the high school as part
of her Senior Project. As a student in the Child Development program, she has first
hand knowledge of the need for a better play area for the preschool students attending
Cubs’ Den.
The child development course is a valuable experience for students who will attend
elementary education programs in college. The classes teach students how to create
lesson plans and offers them the opportunity apply these lessons while working in Cubs’
Den, the district’s preschool program. The preschool is devoted to enhancing the total
development of children. It is free to all preschool children who live in the Greensburg
Salem School District and Greensburg Salem enrolls up to 15 children each semester.
The Cubs’ Den classroom is at the high school, and while it includes an outdoor play
area, the space is in dire need of upgrades.
Storkel’s goal is to raise money for a new playset, get new surfacing underneath the
playground, and paint the cement circle to make it more interactive for the children. The
current playset has been at the school for over 15 years and is showing wear and tear.
Preschool students need to actively play every day so that they can develop necessary
motor skills. Playing outside contributes to physically healthier children, social/
emotional development, in both sensory skills and happiness. A play space that is safe,
inviting, and actually encourages free play is very important to the program.
If you are interested in donating to this project, either monetarily or with general
supplies, please contact Kasey at [email protected]. Contributions can be made to
the Greensburg Salem Cubs’ Den Project and sent to Greensburg Salem High School.
