Silver Award Project Leads Students to Start National Junior Honor Society Lilly Kosoglow and Evelyn Swanson decided to work together on their Girl Scout Silver Award. The Silver Award, representing leadership, is the highest award a Middle School Girl Scout can earn and involves choosing a project that is both sustainable, and meets a need in our local community. Their project accomplishes both of these goals. Both of these young ladies wanted to make a difference in the Greensburg Salem Middle School. They realized not every outstanding student is recognized for their achievements since only 10% of students achieve the prestigious recognition of Distinguished Honors for a 4.0 GPA. To address this challenge, Lilly and Evelyn are working with Mr. Jones, Principal of Greensburg Salem Middle School as well as the School Board and Superintendent Dr. Amato to start a chapter of the National Junior Honor Society at GSMS. A teacher advisor as well as a five teacher panel are being determined and will be in place at the beginning of the school year. At that time the Advisor will make the request for the Chapter Charter, and these young ladies will begin as the foundation of the new team of officers. They will work with the teachers and administration to have the first class of students inducted at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. It is a long process, but these young ladies are determined to succeed and make an impact as leaders in their school and their community. Art Invades Nicely Elementary Teachers, PTO members, students, families and the community worked together to bring an exciting night of hands-on art experiences to Nicely Elementary’s first Family Art Night. Students viewed works of art by famous artists, then created their own masterpieces in the artistic style on display. Other stations included a “Who Drew It?” contest, a visit with a local artist and a student-created mural project. Students guess which of their favorite teacher artists created the master- pieces on display. Hutchinson Elementary Hosts STEAM Carnival Hutchinson Elementary’s 3rd Annual STEAM Carnival was held on Tuesday, May 16th. This year’s Carnival engaged our K-5 students in learning activities related to robotics, physics, coding, music, biology, a math “escape room,” and more! Captivated students look on as Mrs. Goodge conducts a science experiment. Summer STEAM Camp students demonstrate for Dr. Suppo how to design a video game using Bloxels technology. STEAM Camp was funded by a grant from the Westmoreland- Fayette Workforce Investment Board. 46 | Greensburg Salem
