Greensburg Salem has aligned its upcoming initiatives with the recently approved Strategic Plan (2016-2019). The district is beginning with an end in mind and that “end” is helping all students to be successful. In order to accomplish this at the secondary level, administrators and teachers will be focusing on ongoing professional development. During the 2016-17 school year, it will be all about planning the journey. What do we want students to know and to be able to do? What standards need addressed and how will they be assessed? What key understanding of the lesson is necessary for success? How do you answer the students’ question – “Why am I learning this?” Several proven educational models and effective instructional theories will help to guide GS educators to answer those questions. Understanding By Design (UBD) by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe will be used to align standards, establish learning targets and set understanding levels for all courses 6-12. Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of differentiated instruction and how to implement it to help both exceptional and complex (with multiple needs) learners through the teachings of Carol Ann Tomlinson. Because the effectiveness of the teacher relates directly to student success, GS will be using Charlotte Danielson’s research-based Framework for Teaching as foundation for professional conversations and discussions helping them to enhance their teaching skills. The road to helping all students be successful is not an easy one but Greensburg Salem has mapped out its route, planned ahead, and has its eyes on the final destination – graduating students who are career and/or college-ready.
