THE WOMEN’S BOARD OF PITTSBURGH SILVER JUBILEE On Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, The Women’s Board of Pittsburgh will celebrate 25 years of giving during a Silver Jubilee. Since its founding in 1991, the Women’s Board of Pittsburgh has raised over $500,000 for different nonprofit organizations whose primary mission is to promote the welfare and development of children in the Greater Pittsburgh area. The 2017 beneficiary is the Sharpsburg Community Library and proceeds will go toward the Full STEAM Ahead Program. STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) activities provide elementary school-age children an opportunity to learn by doing, which enhances what is taught in school. BREATHE PENNSYLVANIA OFFERS FREE COLDWEATHER MASKS In observance of National Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month, Breathe Pennsylvania is offering free cold-weather masks to residents within its 10-county service area of Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Washington and Westmoreland counties. The breathable foam mask, developed by Breathe Pennsylvania over 30 years ago, loops over the ears and covers the mouth and nose, providing a warm pocket of air. The cold air restricts the flow of air to and from the lungs of those suffering from respiratory illnesses, so the cold-weather mask helps to warm the air before it reaches the lungs. According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States, affecting an estimated 24 million people nationwide with as many as half undiagnosed. ACCREDITATION PROMOTES PUBLIC TRUST, ENSURES PERMANENCE Allegheny Land Trust was awarded a renewed accreditation on Aug. 17 by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, signifying confidence in ALT’s ability to protect and manage land in perpetuity. ALT was among 38 land trusts across the United States to achieve accreditation or to have accreditation renewed in August, and is one of only 350 accredited land trusts in the nation. There are approximately 1,700 land trusts in total throughout the country.
