AAUW PRESENTS‘ HIV / AIDS: THE EVOLUTION OF A DISEASE’
On Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017, beginning at 9:30 a. m., the Fox Chapel Branch of the American Association of University Women will present“ HIV / AIDS: The Evolution of a Disease” at Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church.
Guest speaker Dennis Bergevin, honorary co-chair of the World AIDS Day Conference 2016 held in Pittsburgh on Dec. 1, will highlight some of the scientific breakthroughs and prevention efforts worldwide that are leading the medical community to believe an amazing outcome is possible.
Bergevin is neither a physician nor a researcher; his connection with AIDS is more personal. He was among the first large cohort of individuals struck with the disease in the 1980s, and he’ s now among those reaching“ senior” status as an ongoing AIDS patient. As a long-term survivor, Bergevin participates in many AIDS-related activities and events to infuse the conversation with a valuable patient perspective. His involvement continues to help the teams of professionals who are battling the disease on many fronts to better communicate with their patients.
Along with his husband, Doug Shreck, Bergevin owns Elsen Associates, a Pittsburgh firm that designs and handcrafts wigs for opera companies, including some of the biggest names on the stage. He is also an acclaimed artist and sculptor.
The public is welcome to attend this free AAUW-sponsored presentation.
