ZELIENOPLE ROTARY CLUB AWARDS ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Five graduating Seneca Valley High School seniors with a passion for community service will get a little extra help paying for their post-secondary education through the Zelienople Rotary Club, which recently awarded its annual scholarships. A sixth scholarship is provided to a graduating senior who demonstrates a strong interest in journalism.
This year’ s recipients are: Hollen Alexa Davinsizer, Amber Lynne Gorog, Thomas D. George, Brock Daniel Gresock, Chloe Ross Ruffennach and Kaileen Elizabeth Ryan.
Hollen is the recipient of the Tullio“ Doc” Viola Scholarship, given for outstanding community service and volunteerism. The award is named in memory of Tullio“ Doc” Viola, a beloved longtime member of the Zelienople Rotary. The daughter of Steven and Lisa Davinsizer of Harmony, Hollen has been active with Hosanna Industries, helping to renovate homes for the underprivileged, and Feed My Sheep, providing meals, snacks and blankets for the homeless. She has also volunteered with the Light of Life Ministry and Children’ s Hospital. A member of the National Honor Society, Hollen has also played on the Seneca Valley High School varsity tennis team and served as captain. She plans to attend Gannon University and has been accepted into the school’ s highly competitive Physician Assistant Program.
Amber, Thomas and Brock are the three recipients of the Zelienople Rotary Scholarships, given for displaying a spirit of community volunteerism.
Amber has used her vocal talents to bring joy to the lives of others and regularly sings with her church youth ministry band and performs at senior citizen communities. In addition, she serves as a youth ministry leader at her church. The daughter of Peter and Lorraine Gorog of Harmony, Amber plans to attend Duquesne University and is considering a career in musical therapy. Throughout high school she has participated in the all-school musicals and Madrigals. This year she was selected to participate in the State Chorus. Amber is a member of the National Honor Society.
Thomas is also a vocalist and plays bluegrass music in his family’ s band. One of his volunteer activities is raising money for the Blue Grass Relief Fund that provides support for bluegrass programming at WYEP and assists local bluegrass friends in need. Thomas, the son of Donn and Doreen George of Zelienople, also volunteers with“ A Night to Remember,” a prom event for special needs young adults. He is a member of the all-school musicals, string ensemble and chorus. Thomas plans to attend Clarion University of Pennsylvania and will major in business and finance.
Brock’ s extensive community service work includes being a member of the Boy Scouts, Friends of the Park, working at The Strand, serving as an AAU basketball coach, and volunteering with a veterans group and at his church. The son of Daniel and Rhonda Gresock of Zelienople, Brock was captain of the SVHS football team and a member of the SVHS varsity baseball team. He also participated in the Varsity Club, chorus, show choir and worked as a newscaster for the school’ s television station, SVTV. He plans to major in finance and accounting at West Virginia University.
Kaileen, the daughter of Martin Ryan and Kathleen Bogue, is the recipient of the Zelienople Rotary Vocational Scholarship. She plans to study baking and pastry arts at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute. During high school she volunteered her time with the Miracle League, helping to provide disabled children with summer activities and served as a cheer coach for young girls. Kaileen was a cheerleader at SVHS and served on Student Council.
Chloe is the recipient of the Maureen Lutz Journalism Scholarship. A staff writer for the school newspaper for three years, she believes her contributions to the school papers have provided insight into her growth as a writer and journalist. The daughter of Charles and Kerri Ruffennach, she plans to study journalism in college.
The six recipients will be honored at the Zelienople Fourth of July parade and at a Rotary event in late July.
The Rotary Club of Zelienople has been serving the Zelienople-Harmony community since 1924. The club meets weekly at 7 a. m. on Fridays at the Spring Street Café on Main in Zelienople.
BREATHE PENNSYLVANIA TO HOLD ASTHMA DAY AT KENNYWOOD PARK
Breathe Pennsylvania will host Asthma Day at Kennywood Park on Thursday, Aug. 3, from 10:15 a. m. until 1 p. m. The event brings together fourth through sixth-graders, along with their parents or caregivers, to meet with professionals, learn about asthma, ask questions and have fun!
Breathe Pennsylvania’ s goal is to put an emphasis on education and recreation, which encourages children to explore activities that they can take part in.
“ Times are changing; children with asthma want to have fun, and they are looking to understand their asthma in ways that don’ t separate them from their peers,” says Brittany Zuckerman, Director of Development and Communications with Breathe Pennsylvania.
