’ OPEN YOUR HEART TO A SENIOR’ NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
The number one volunteer service request by seniors in Allegheny County is a ride to the doctor’ s office. Do you have an hour to help? United Way’ s Open Your Heart to a Senior volunteers can take seniors to appointments or the grocery store, deliver meals, help at senior centers, take a senior out for dinner, do light yard work and much more. ‘ THE BIG SNEEZE’
Local author Linda L. Medwig proudly announces the release of her children’ s book“ The Big Sneeze.” Medwig began writing the book decades ago for a Children’ s Literature class while working on her elementary education degree. After many years and the passing of her mother( who illustrated the book) from Alzheimer’ s disease, the author decided to have the book published in her memory with part of the proceeds benefiting the Pittsburgh Chapter of the Alzheimer’ s Association.“ The Big Sneeze” can be purchased at amazon. com, thebigsneeze. net, and through Word Association Publishers. ‘ Ask the Attorney’ Sessions for Low- Income Families
Free legal consultation for non-criminal issues such as divorce, bankruptcy, credit issues, family matters, rent disputes and more is available for families in need at NHCO locations on the third Wednesday of each month at 7 p. m. excluding the month of December. Attendees MUST preregister for the sessions by contacting Brady at briedel @ nhco. org or 412.408.3830 x3217.
NHCO Speakers Available NHCO has volunteer speakers who will speak to your business, congregation, civic group or school at no charge about its programs, services and volunteer opportunities. Donate Your Car to Community Auto
Your unwanted vehicle, no matter what the condition, can help a low-income, working individual. Vehicles donated to Community Auto are repaired and sold at below-market value to local working families who need them to get to work. Cars not suitable for repair are sold at auction and the money is used for the program. If you have a vehicle that is not worth the cost of repairs, or sits unused, contact Community Auto, a program of NHCO, at 724.443.8300 or communityauto. org. NHCO’ s Annual Back-to-School Collection is On!
North Hills Community Outreach is collecting new backpacks and school supplies for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Backpacks, notebooks, binders, folders, pencils, pens – anything students need to succeed! Gently used Texas Instruments graphic / scientific calculators are also needed for high school students. Food Donations Needed at NHCO
North Hills Community Outreach’ s three food pantries serve 1,400 local families each year. During summer, the pantries do not get enough donations to keep the shelves stocked, but the same number of people are served. Please consider holding a food drive or donating nonperishable, unexpired food or paper products. Financial donations are also crucially needed. Donations may be dropped off at any NHCO office, Monday through Friday, from 9 a. m. to 4 p. m. or alternate arrangements can be made. CRANBERRY ROTARY HOSTS ANNUAL‘ SERVICE ABOVE SELF’ BANQUET
Seneca Valley students, business leaders and community members were recognized on May 31 at the 2016 George Henderson“ Service Above Self” Awards Dinner hosted by the Cranberry Township Noon Rotary Club at The Camelot Banquet Hall in Warrendale.
Cranberry Township Environmental Programs Coordinator Lorin Meeder was named Public Servant of the Year; Armstrong was named Business of the Year; Seneca Valley Middle School Counselor Robert Magerko was honored as Educator of the Year; Cranberry Artists Network President and Haine Middle School Empty Bowls Coordinator Noele Reynolds was honored as Community Servant of the Year; and Seneca Valley Senior Megan Piotrowski was named Student of the Year.
Piotrowski was also recognized, along with fellow Seneca Valley seniors Ben Bachik, Carinne Geil, Abigail Von Wormer, Emma Sledge, Meghan Dillon, Lauren Agnello and Sarah Johanknecht, as 2016 Rotary Scholarship winners.
The 2016 Cranberry Township Rotarian of the Year Award was presented to Shavonne Ayres by Jerry Savoroski, Rotary’ s Past President and the most recent winner of the Rotarian of the Year award. Additional recognition was given to Ayres and Bill Hewko, for being named Paul Harris Fellows, and to John Marshall for being recognized as a member of the Paul Harris Fellow Society. ■
