Chartiers Valley Senior Honored as Two-Time Carson Scholar
The Carson Scholars Fund, founded in 1994 by renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Benjamin S. Carson, M. D., and his wife, Candy Carson, was created in response to growing concerns about the state of education in the United States. After reviewing a study that ranked U. S. students near the bottom internationally in science and math, the Carsons were inspired to take action. They also noticed a disparity in recognition within schools where athletic achievements were often celebrated with large trophies, while academic excellence received far less visible acknowledgment.
Motivated to change this culture, the Carsons established the Carson Scholars Fund to promote and reward academic achievement and humanitarianism. Their belief was simple yet powerful: when students are encouraged to excel early, they are more likely to remain motivated and succeed throughout their educational journey.
The program awarded its first 25 scholarships in 1996. Today, thanks to the continued support of donors and partners, more than 500 scholarships are awarded annually. To date, the organization has recognized over 12,000 students nationwide, with more than 5,600 earning the distinction multiple times. Carson Scholars have gone on to attend more than 900 colleges and universities, receiving over $ 11.6 million in scholarship funds.
Continuing this tradition of excellence, Chartiers Valley High School senior Charmi Nallanchakravathula was recently recognized at the Carson Scholars Banquet held at Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square. Charmi was honored as a two-time Carson Scholar and had the opportunity to present her work at the Scholar Project Showcase. The event featured a keynote address by Dr. Carson, celebrating the achievements of students who exemplify both academic excellence and a commitment to service.
