Carnegie Elementary Celebrates the 2026 Winter Olympics!
The 5th graders at Carnegie Elementary celebrated the 2026 Winter Olympics with a two-week, academic-based Olympiad of their own. The entire student body enjoyed an Opening Ceremony parade through the hallways complete with the Olympics musical theme, nine Winter Olympics nations’ flags waving, Olympic‘ torches’, and winter sports equipment.
Mr. Donnelly’ s three student blocks were divided into teams each representing a prominent Winter Olympic nation: Canada, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Austria, and Netherlands. Teams created and shared a multimedia presentation about their country following the opening parade. The next two weeks of class time featured activities and lessons named for an Olympic event and each with a focus on either Reading / Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Robotics, and Engineering. Teams were awarded gold, silver, or bronze medals based on average scores for each assignment. For example, real
scores from ice skating events were used in decimal operations, ski jumps were engineered from Hot Wheels tracks, Sphero robots were coded in a curling match; and two informational texts about Olympic history were labeled the Biathlon. Overall, there were eleven events matched with learning activities.
Upon the closing of the actual Winter Olympics, students created and displayed bar graphs depicting the final medals count for all nine countries. Sixteen PA Standards across Math, ELA, and Science were addressed during this two week event. arlynton-Montour
