The pasta dinner was held on a

a good measure of gab. When all was
said and done, student government was
able to send each family a check in the
amount of $5,600.

High school Spanish teacher Steven
Vayanos offers enrichment in his classes
with students begin playing chess in
Spanish to practice vocabulary and
sentence-building skills, thanks to a
proposal he submitted to DonorsChoose.org.
A proposal to fund chess sets was
fully funded by the organization in
the amount of $364. DonorsChoose.
org is an online charity that makes it
easy for educators to fulfill classroom
needs. Public school teachers can post
classroom project requests on the site;
individuals can then donate monies to
fund a project that most inspires them.
When a proposal reaches its funding
goal, DonorsChoose ships the materials
to the school.
Mr. Vayanos will use the chess set in his
dual enrollment Spanish classes. As part
of the course, students learn about the
cultural importance of the game in Spain
and other Spanish-speaking countries.
For many in the course, it will be the
first time they learn to play chess in any
language.

Carlynton was one of only 20 schools in
the state to be selected for the CPR Anytime
program. In addition to being awarded
the scholarship, the school will have the
opportunity to apply for an American Heart
Association teaching garden. The teaching
garden is geared to offer real-life learning in
an outdoor laboratory where students can
nurture growing plants and understand the
value of good eating habits.

This past winter, three young girls in

In March, two families in the

This time, members of the high school
student government decided to take action

a few short weeks. Posters were made and
students pounded the pavement to solicit
donations of pasta, sauce, bread, paper
products and all the other fixings necessary
for a large scale event.
