most meaningful service projects this semester was a partnership with the food pantry at St. Mark’ s Church in Brookline.
NHS students volunteered their time packing lunches for individuals and families in need. To make the project even more special, students decorated each lunch bag with holiday themed drawings and positive messages. These small but thoughtful details helped turn a simple meal into a message of kindness and support. Students received heartfelt thank yous from the families picking up the bags. In addition to packing lunches, students participated in a stuffed animal drive for the Children of Ukraine, collected items for Jeremiah’ s Place-Pittsburgh’ s only crisis nursery, and donated paperback books to Foundations of Hope which collects books for incarcerated individuals.
Another successful event was the“ Parent’ s Night Out” held at the Junior Senior High School right before Thanksgiving. NHS members volunteered as babysitters so parents could enjoy a night out during a busy time of year. The students planned activities, supervised children, and made sure everyone was safe and having fun. Parents greatly appreciated the event and praised the students for being responsible, organized, and enthusiastic.
The holidays are a great time to earn volunteer hours as many local organizations need help. Students assisted at Food Truck Fridays at St. Raphael the Archangel parish, helped elementary students do their holiday shopping and make gingerbread houses at Carnegie Elementary, and kicked off the holiday season at the Carnegie Library’ s Celebration the Season event.
On the last day of school before winter break, NHS students stayed after school to serve a holiday lunch for faculty and staff.
Carlynton NHS members were also very active during the summer months. Several students volunteered at summer camps where they taught performing arts such as music, theater, and dance. Through these programs, they helped younger children build confidence, teamwork skills, and an interest in the arts. Other students worked with children with disabilities, providing support and helping make camp experiences more inclusive. Some NHS members also volunteered at youth sports clinics, where they helped young athletes learn basic skills while encouraging teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy habits.
The chapter’ s accomplishments have made the Carlynton family proud. 1,000 service hours in one semester is a major achievement and is even more impressive considering students are also balancing challenging classes, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities. Looking ahead, Carlynton NHS members are preparing for more service opportunities. Students will help serve food at local Lenten fish fries, direct families at Curriculum Night by and assist with events at the local Carnegie Library, supporting teen activities, cultural events, and community outreach.
The Carlynton Junior Senior High School National Honor Society chapter is a great example of what students can achieve when academic success is combined with compassion and commitment.
