Carlynton Takes Proactive Steps to Manage Energy Costs
As energy costs continue to rise, the Carlynton School District is pursuing new strategies to control expenses and maximize the value of every taxpayer dollar. One of the District’ s newest costmanagement initiatives is participation in the NRG PowerPay Demand Response Program.
The program, which began for Carlynton on June 1, 2026, is operated through NRG Curtailment Solutions and PJM Interconnection, the regional organization responsible for coordinating the electrical grid throughout much of the mid-Atlantic region.
During periods when the demand for electricity is especially high or the regional electrical grid is under stress, PJM may ask participating organizations to temporarily reduce their electricity consumption. By reducing demand during these limited periods, participating organizations help support the reliability of the regional power system and may receive financial compensation based on their verified reductions.
Carlynton has enrolled Carnegie Elementary School and Carlynton Junior Senior High School in the program. NRG has reviewed the electrical usage at both buildings and established seasonal energy reduction targets based on each facility’ s normal operating patterns.
When a demand response event or required test is announced, the District will receive advance notice and implement a building specific Reduction Action Plan. Depending on the building, the plan may include temporarily adjusting selected heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment, modifying equipment schedules, reducing lighting in unoccupied areas or taking other responsible steps to lower electrical demand.
The program does not require the District to operate generators. Any adjustments will be carefully managed by the District’ s facilities staff to protect essential building operations and avoid unnecessary disruption to students, staff or community activities.
The District’ s compensation will be based on the amount of electricity that is actually reduced during program events and testing periods. Because payments are performance based, the District will evaluate the results after completing its first full year of participation before reporting a final financial benefit.
In addition to the potential revenue, the program provides the District with improved access to electrical usage data.
This information will help the facilities department better understand when and how energy is being consumed, identify areas where additional efficiencies may be possible and make more informed operational decisions.
Participation in the NRG PowerPay Program is one component of Carlynton’ s broader effort to responsibly manage longterm utility costs. Along with competitive energy purchasing, energy monitoring, facility improvements and the planned solar project at the Junior Senior High School, the District continues to explore practical opportunities to reduce expenses and protect resources available for student programs and services.
Responsible financial management requires more than responding to rising costs after they occur. It requires actively identifying opportunities, evaluating available programs and making operational changes that can produce long term value.
