Building for the Future at Carnegie Elementary arlynton-Montour CARLYNTON SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS
The transformation of Carnegie Elementary School is officially underway. Following several years of planning, design, public discussion and bidding, contractors mobilized at the school in late May 2026 and began the first phase of construction.
The Carnegie Elementary Renovation Project represents a major investment in the future of Carlynton students and the broader community. The project is designed to modernize the building, address aging infrastructure, improve safety and accessibility, and create learning environments that better support today’ s instructional programs.
When completed, the renovated school will provide students and staff with updated classrooms, improved instructional spaces, modern mechanical and electrical systems, enhanced security, and more accessible facilities. The project will also include a new cafetorium addition that can support student dining, performances, assemblies and community activities.
Carnegie Elementary was originally constructed in 1954. Although the building has served generations of Carlynton students, many of its major systems and spaces require substantial modernization.
The renovation will address several areas of the building, including:
• Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, plumbing and electrical systems
• Safety, security and controlled building access
• Accessibility improvements throughout the school
• Renovated classrooms and instructional spaces
• Improvements to the library, media and STEAM learning areas
• An updated music room and additional flexible learning spaces
• Replacement of aging sanitary and utility infrastructure
• Construction of the new cafetorium addition
• Restrooms that can support both school and stadium activities
• Site circulation and other exterior improvements
The project has been carefully phased so that construction can continue while Carnegie Elementary remains operational during the school year.
During the first several weeks of construction, contractors focused primarily on site preparation, selective demolition and environmental abatement. Abatement work began in several areas that must be cleared before larger renovation activities can proceed. Work has included portions of the auditorium, nearby storage areas and the former book closet that will eventually become part of the entrance to a classroom located above the stage.

Updated site logistics and construction phasing plans were submitted in June. These plans identify contractor work areas, construction access points, temporary barriers, material storage locations and the sequencing of work throughout the building and site. Careful coordination of these plans will be essential as the District prepares to welcome students back to school while construction continues.
The District and project team are also coordinating the installation of new water-service infrastructure. This includes the routing of new water lines from the front of the building to the rear addition. The improvements will support the building’ s
