HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFERS FREE SHINGLES VACCINE AT IMMUNIZATION CLINIC The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) is offering the Shingles vaccine free of charge, for a limited time, to uninsured or under-insured people, 50 years of age and older. While supplies last, Shingles vaccines are available at the health department’s Immunization Clinic located at 3441 Forbes Avenue in Oakland. No appointment is necessary; however, individuals are asked to call 412.578.8062 in advance to ensure that supplies are still available. Clinic hours are as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Wednesday, 1 p.m. – 8 p.m. Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with blisters, caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox can develop shingles because the virus remains in the nerve cells of the body after chickenpox goes away, but it can reappear many years later causing Shingles. The risk of getting Shingles begins to increase around the age of 50. Anyone that age or older should get the vaccine, regardless of whether they recall having chickenpox. Studies show that 99% of individuals 40 and older have had chickenpox. People who have already had Shingles can still receive the vaccine to prevent future occurrences of the disease. The vaccine reduces the risk of developing Shingles by more than 50%, and it reduces the risk of pain after the rash by 67%. ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON PARISH SELLS PROPERTY TO APIS MEAD AND WINERY St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish has sold 206 Mary Street to Apis Mead and Winery. The property consists of a 10,000-square-foot building situated between Carnegie’s business mall and Chartiers Creek. Apis Mead and Winery acquired the property for a planned expansion of its business, less than two blocks from the current location. The building, known for over two decades as Seton Hall, served as a social hall and offices for the parish and its predecessor institution, Holy Souls Parish, an ethnically Italian Catholic parish. When the 2004 flood associated with Hurricane Ivan forced the closure of Holy Souls Church, Seton Hall became a temporary worship site. Two Masses were offered there each Sunday until 2011, when the parish opened St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church on the site of the former St. Luke Church. Subsequently, the building was temporarily reopened as the staging offices for the 2014 Franklin Graham Festival of the Billy Graham Association. The proceeds of the sale will reduce the parish’s building debt for the new church. For the first time since 2011, the debt balance is below $2 million. n Carlynton-Montour | Fall 2016 | icmags.com 7
