RIVERRIDE100
RiverRide100, an annual bike ride fundraiser for the Arthritis Foundation, has been transformed from a small, local event into one where people all over the country can participate.
By pledging to ride the mileage that fits their fitness level or personal goal, participants have the opportunity explore their surroundings by bike— which is a great low-impact activity for people with arthritis or joint pain— while also raising money for a great cause. The event is free for participants and is being held throughout the month of August. A group of the original event founders will also complete its annual 106-mile bike ride from Rockwood, Pennsylvania, to Point State Park in downtown Pittsburgh on Aug. 20.
Organizer Jeff Krakoff said,“ We want to open up the event to anyone, anywhere in the country and not restrict it to one day. This year’ s event is extremely customizable, so riders have the option to challenge themselves by pledging to ride 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles and to complete their mileage in one day or throughout the entire month of August. Since there is no set day to complete the mileage, participants from all over the country now can take part in the event.”
Each participant is able to create their own fundraising webpage or a team page through the RiverRide100 CrowdRise site.
The bike fundraiser began in 2013 when a group of nine bike riders traveled from Pittsburgh to Washington, D. C., over five days to raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. In 2014 and 2015 the event evolved from five days into a one-day, 106-mile bike ride.
Arthritis affects one in every five adults and 300,000 children, and is the leading cause of disability in the United States.
