CMHS Educator Honored with “Leaders in the Classroom” Award D r. Sandy Cavanaugh knew that representatives from Chevron were touring her seventh-period classroom this past October. The longtime Canon-Mac teacher also knew the company was interested in the school store concept and associated curriculum she helped spearhead. What she didn’t expect was to be honored right there— right in front of her students—with a Chevron/Steelers Leaders in the Classroom Award. But that’s just what happened. “I was extremely surprised—I had no clue,” she said. “It was very nice that students were able to see this as well and know that this effort- and award- was for them and the school store.” Ms. Cavanaugh is one of 16 recipients of the award, which is bestowed upon selected nominees from Western Pennsylvania and Northern West Virginia who utilize innovative and highly engaging STEM instruction on a daily basis. Nominated by assistant high school Principal Ken Crowley for developing hands-on curriculum that challenges students to creatively solve real-world problems, she received a $1,000 grant to support her innovative approach to learning. But that’s not all: Cavanaugh also was awarded tickets to the Dec. 17 Steelers vs. Patriots game, where she will join the other 15 winners for an on-field recognition ceremony. Congratulations, Ms. Cavanaugh! Donation Helps Blessings in a Backpack Do More Good at CMSD A $1,250 donation from Kamatsu Corp. to Blessings in a Backpack will help the nonprofit do more good in the Canon-McMillan School District. Blessings in a Backpack provides free food – items like granola, canned soup and Ramen – for the weekend to children who qualify. This is the fifth year the nonprofit has partnered with the district. A crew from Kamatsu stopped by South Central Elementary School in November to drop off the check and to help package the food the children would take home that week. A huge THANK YOU to the company for their time and generosity! 48 Canon-Mac
