Canon-Mac's Sixth- Annual Literacy Night Wows Participants M ore than 250 Canon- McMillan students and their parents recently enjoyed a "Reading Safari" held late last month at the Frank Sarris Public Library. Reading and literacy skills were the primary focus of the sixth- annual event, sponsored jointly by the Canon- McMillan School District and the Canon- McMillan Education Association. Students in kindergarten through fourth grade were invited to attend— and rotated through various learning stations designed and run by Canon- Mac teachers, as well as students in grades 7-12. In addition to receiving a free book, all participants were able to choose from an assortment of coloring books, puzzles, and other small prizes. Elementary principals read safari- themed stories to students and donated the books they read to the children’s department at the library. Canonsburg Middle School students shared original stories they wrote and illustrated. Members of the sorority Pi Phi from Washington & Jefferson College created safari masks and necklaces with students. To top off the night, students were treated to “safari sundaes” from Sarris Candies. Congratulations to all involved for another successful event!
