Showcases Their Skills at the MathCounts Competition

In February , the Canon-McMillan Middle School ( CMMS ) MathCounts team showcased their numerical abilities and strategic thinking at the Washington County MathCounts Competition , clinching an impressive second place . The team , consisting of talented students Jackson Yeager , Will Lyons , Sria Kondapi and Coleson McCormick , not only demonstrated their mathematical skills but also their dedication and teamwork . These attributes were honed through weekly practice sessions after school .

MathCounts competitions are renowned for their challenging format , designed to stimulate young minds and encourage a deep love for mathematics . This competition was no exception , comprising three rigorous rounds that tested the students ' abilities to the fullest . The sprint round demanded quick , accurate calculations without the aid of a calculator , presenting 30 questions to be solved within a 40-minute timeframe . The target round allowed for more thoughtful planning , with eight questions over 20 minutes and the use of calculators was permitted . The culmination of these individual efforts led to the team round , where collaboration and collective problem-solving came into play .
The stakes were heightened by the countdown round , a fast-paced , head-tohead challenge where the top 10 students from the individual
38 CANON-MAC rounds buzzed in to answer questions , adding elements of excitement and pressure . It was in this thrilling environment that Coleson McCormick excelled , securing a 2nd place finish that earned him a spot at the state competition in Harrisburg on March 22 and 23 . His teammates , Sriamcharan Kodapi and Will Lyons , also shone brightly , placing 9th and 8th respectively , showcasing the depth of talent within the CMMS team .
While not every team member placed in the top ten , the participation of Jackson Yeager , Laasyapriya Kondapi ,
Drew Lavallee , Nishanth Jeedipalli , Anna Brinson , Peighton Barrow and Janhavi Bhadane was crucial to the team ' s overall success . Their involvement underscores the competitive spirit and camaraderie that MathCounts competitions foster among participants .
The CMMS MathCounts team ' s achievement at the Washington County competition is a testament to their hard work , preparation and passion for mathematics . As Coleson McCormick advances to the state level , he carries not only the hopes of his team but also the proud tradition of excellence that CMMS has cultivated . With their eyes now set on the state competition , the CMMS MathCounts team continues to exemplify the values of learning , perseverance and the joy found in solving complex mathematical problems .
