WCT KIDZ PERFORM IN ‘ GROOVY ’
Students from various Canon- McMillan schools performed in the 1960s musical “ Groovy .” Under the direction of Missy Voytek , Elaine Frost , and North Strabane band teacher Amy Hickman , students performed at the Elks Lodge in Washington August 2 – 5 . This is the second performance by WCT Kidz , which began last year with a 1950s production entitled “ The Nifty Fifties .” WCT Kidz is a part of the Washington Community Theater . This opportunity is open to all students ages 7 – 15 .
Auditions are held annually in the spring .
“ Groovy ” tells the story of Travis ( played by CMS student Bode Dagen ), a hip teenager who helps to organize a musical festival at Elmer ’ s Apple Farm ( featuring CMHS student Eric Pastore as Elmer ). Travis and crew encounter obstacles with obtaining a permit and getting members of The Lemon Bugs band ( CMS student Ally Popielarczyk and NSIS student Nathan Stockman ) to perform . Enter cranky Mrs . Porter ( CMS student Mackenzie Wolf ) and Sheriff Whithers ( CMS student Caitlin Stambaugh ) who don ' t want any
“ hippies ” ruining their town to add to the commotion . Included in the cast also were CMS students Taylor Pastore ( Hippie Girl with Flute ), Brady Opel ( Cowabunga ), and NSIS students Cali Dagen and Jai Gough ( ensemble and soloist ). Don ' t sweat it-- all ends well for the cast as everyone finally embraces the theme of love , peace , and harmony ! n
CANONSBURG NATIVE ADVANCES TO U . S . NAVY COMMANDING OFFICER
Capt . Jonathan Kline , a 1990 Canon-McMillan High School graduate currently serving in the U . S . Navy for 24 years , recently advanced to Commanding Officer of Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads .
It is home to more than 60 tenant commands , employing 24,000 DoD and government employees in six regional bases . These bases encompass more than 5,000 acres in three Virginia cities and two North Carolina counties . Headquarters staff oversee three Public Works staffs and eight Police , Security , and Fire Departments to protect DoD facilities valued at more than $ 2.5 billion .
“ Serving as the CO is an opportunity to lead sailors and have a positive impact on the warfighting readiness of our sailors and shore installation support to our key headquarters units ,” said Kline .
Asked what he enjoys most about being in the Navy , he replied , “ The satisfaction of knowing that I contribute every day to the safety and security of our country , and the opportunity to see the world and immerse in other cultures and environments , which provides greater context for how our actions have global impact .”
Serving in the Navy has helped Kline grow both professionally and personally .
“ The Navy is who I am and what I do ,” he explained . “ My education and training were provided by the Navy , and my opportunity to travel and live across the globe was made possible by my service in the Navy . I have served with the most remarkable and selfless individuals who are willing to sacrifice everything for our country and our freedom .”
Kline graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in
1994 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering . He also is a 2005 University of Tennessee graduate with a Master of Science in Aviation Systems and earned a Master of Science in Campaign Planning Strategy at National Defense University in 2013 .
Kline is the son of the late Eric Kline and Suzanne Kline , who resides in Canonsburg .
