IN Canon-Mac Fall 2018 | Page 10

WHAT’S NEWS IN CANON-MAC the Crabtree-Kovacicek Patriot House, a newly constructed 22-bed residential facility serving veterans. The event kicked off with the roar of motorcycles. The Patriot Guard Riders along with others, led by County Commissioner Larry Maggi, rode from American Legion Post #175 to the City Mission campus and brought the American flag that was to be raised during the event. The flag had recently flown over the United States Capitol in honor of the Patriot House. CANON-MAC’S GROVE ATTAINS RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT Alexander Grove, who has been a Boy Scout for the past 12 years, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, Scouting’s highest rank. He is a member of Troop 1385 of the Laurel Highlands Council, in the Boy Scouts of America. Grove’s Eagle Project was to enhance the Armory Mentor House in Canonsburg, which exists to provide teens with positive guidance. The project was three pronged: The first, and largest, was to build a fenced-in garden so that teens could learn how to grow flowers and vegetables, giving them goals and purpose. The second was planting bushes, which would provide the teens privacy from the apartment building that was in front of the property. The third was to build a picnic table, giving them a place to gather and learn skills. Dean Gartland welcomed the standing-room-only audience, which included major donors, politicians, veterans organizations, Gold-Star Moms, and the local community. The Washington Festival Chorale provided patriotic music, and retired Brigadier General David Papak of the United States Marine Corps delivered a heartfelt speech of gratitude to the City Mission for its dedication to helping veterans. Maggi, himself a veteran, presented the flag to the color guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 764, who raised the flag for the first time over the Patriot House. The event culminated with the ribbon- cutting ceremony, which featured Dr. Michael Crabtree, a member of the City Mission Board of Directors and a local professor and psychologist for whom the building is named. His generous donation made the construction of the Patriot House possible. The Crabtree-Kovacicek Patriot House is dedicated to both Dr. Crabtree CITY MISSION VETERANS FACILITY FINALLY BECOMES A REALITY Over 600 community members gathered at City Mission on Tuesday, July 3, to celebrate the Grand Opening of 8 724.942.0940 TO ADVERTISE ❘ icmags.com and Lance Corporal Ryan Kovacicek.
