Art Connections Students
and the
Carnegie International 2013
Under the guidance of Barb Girone, elementary art teacher,
the Art Connections students from Elroy Elementary had the
unique opportunity to work with TeeRex Studio and The Carnegie
Museum to kick-off the Carnegie International Art Show that
opened on October 5, 2013. The Carnegie International is an art
exhibit at the Carnegie Museum that takes place every four years
and showcases the artwork of artists from around the world. The
show will be at the Carnegie Museum through March 16, 2014.
Students from Art Connections, an after school art group that
focuses on making connections through art, were invited to visit
TeeRex Studio to assist in printing a giant scarf with the Carnegie
International logo for Dippy the Dinosaur who resides in front
of the museum. TeeRex Studio, located on Penn Avenue in the
Garfield area of Pittsburgh, is a local Pittsburgh printing company
operated by a group of designers, artists and printers. The students
began with a lesson on the screen printing process with each of
them creating a t-shirt with the Carnegie International logo. After
their first lesson of learning the printmaking process, the students
were then introduced to Daniel Baumann of Basel, Switzerland,
54 Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall
the curator of the Carnegie International exhibit. Daniel Baumann
discussed the theme of this year’s Carnegie International which
emphasizes childhood play. The students participated in a lively
discussion concerning the design of the logo and the art work
that would be on display. The students were particularly fascinated
with the piece titled Lozziwurm which is a colorful, tunnel-like
piece of playground equipment designed by a Swiss sculptor
and is currently installed in front of the museum as both art and
play equipment.
The final part of the trip allowed the students to collaborate
with the artists at TeeRex Studio and screen print the large scarf
for Dippy the Dinosaur. The scarf contained a series of geometric
patterns that overlapped in the colors of purple, green, yellow, and
red. The scarf was placed on Dippy the Dinosaur to celebrate the
wonderful art of the Carnegie International exhibit. The students
that participated in the experience were Dustin Bianco, Tyler
Bianco, Zachary Lutton, Kiran Gurung, Taryn Barrett, Cesia Garcia,
Skylar Schmidt, Joey Brickner, Zane Gugliuzza, Braden Gugliuzza,
and Maddi McBride.
