“ Bring a Parent to a Half-Day of First Grade!” By Mrs. Amy Ferkett, Mrs. Amy Smith and Mr. Jeff Wastchak rentwood Borough SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS
Brentwood Borough School District
The First Grade Classes at Elroy Elementary hosted a“ Bring a Parent to a Half-Day of First Grade!” Parents were invited to join their children in their classrooms from 9 am to 11 am to learn about Common Core Math. The parents learned 14 Addition and Subtraction Strategies that their children have learned and then practiced those strategies with the students using activities and games provided by the teachers. Approximately, forty parents joined the students and fun and learning abounded!
Thanks to the Elroy PTA and the Brentwood Borough School District, who provided the supplies; every student was given an array of Math activities and flashcards to practice their Addition and Subtraction facts at home. Each classroom also has a set of the activities and flashcards for the students to practice at school. Each student is being encouraged to use the activities to practice and earn a spot on a First Grade“ Math Superstar Wall of Fame.”
Thanks to First Grade teachers: Amy Ferkett, Amy Smith, and Jeff Wastchak, and Duquesne University Student Teachers: Caroline Plante, Caroline Connors and Jamie Niemiec, who planned, prepared, and implemented this great morning! Thanks also to all the parents who made an extra effort to join us in order to support the children’ s success.
Jump Rope For Heart
ELROY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS JUMP FOR THEIR HEARTS AND HELP SAVE LIVES By Mr. David Pavlecic
Students at Elroy Elementary are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke, our nation’ s No. 1 and No. 4 killers. Elroy Elementary School hosted its annual Jump Rope for Heart kickoff event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth. Jump Rope for Heart teaches students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows them that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the whole community. The need to educate children about the
70 Brentwood-Baldwin-Whitehall importance of physical activity couldn’ t be timelier. According to recent studies, about one-third of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight and obese. The students will participate in the Jump Rope for Heart during their physical education classes in the month of February. We would like to thank those who participated in handing out the stickers, the jump rope contestants, the American Heart Association, the fantastic student body and a special thanks to Rory McFiercely III for making an appearance.
