WEEK
By Mrs. Cindy Matthews
What an exciting day of science the 4th and 5th grade students at Elroy had during Science Week Pittsburgh at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on October 28, 2016. Science Week Pittsburgh offered an outreach for science programs throughout the area by sponsoring student workshops and grants for science materials. Our students rotated between six different unique science workshops. Our students smashed and exploded various substances while they explored the differences between chemical and physical changes. They also stepped inside The Science Week Pittsburgh Planetarium. The dome allowed our students to step into outer space for a fun learning adventure about the night-time sky. Students also saw how electricity runs motors and how wind can be used to make a motor generate electricity. Each student also received a pair of“ Rainbow Glasses” as they were shown light and color through a prism. In the afternoon, our students participated in learning about the physics of sound. The students explored the relationship between sound and vibrations using pins and records. A STEAM activity concluded our day as the students worked collaboratively building a structure. This was an awesome day of learning and fun!! A big thank you to the Elroy PTA. They provided our buses to attend this event. Since our school participated, we are receiving a $ 250.00 grant to purchase science materials!!
